Fine Art or CTE Requirements
1 Years of Fine Art or Career & Technical Education (CTE)
Arizona universities require that all students complete at least 1 year of fine arts courses or a course from a school’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings. Fine Art courses include the visual arts (painting, ceramics, photography), music (band, orchestra, chorus), and theatre. Some Arizona universities will also accept courses such as graphic design or media arts in this category as well. CTE courses prepare students for careers directly after high school or for further education in specific career fields. Please verify with your school counselor to verify your fine art or CTE course will count toward the university requirement.
Although Arizona Universities only require 1 year of fine arts or CTE, you can definitely take extra years. This could be important if someone is interested and would like to study in a fine arts major, as most fine art programs have additional requirements beyond general university admissions.
Deficiencies
Although you should always plan to complete the Sweet 16 courses, you could have up to 1 year missing in the fine arts or CTE category and still be admitted (assuming you have completed all the coursework in at least four of the remaining five areas of study). See deficiencies.
How to Plan for Fine Art/CTE
Below is a chart that can provide an idea of which classes a student should be taking each year to complete 1 year of fine art. Extra years are marked with an * in the chart below. This chart is only an example of possible course combinations a student might complete. You should always consult your school counselor each year when designing your schedule, and identify yourself as a "college-bound" student.
